Narration

Direct Speech : বক্তা তার কথাগুলো যেভাবে বলে হুবহু সেভাবে উল্লেখ করাকে Direct Speech বলে। যেমন:

আল্লাহ বলেন, ‘‘আমি সমগ্র বিশ্ব মণ্ডল সৃষ্টি করেছি।’’

Allah says, “I have created the whole world.”
Sub.

এখানে আল্লাহ যেভাবে বলেছেন ঠিক সেভাবে লেখা হয়েছে। অর্থাৎ আল্লাহর কথা হুবহু উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে।

এখন আল্লাহর কথা যদি আমাদের মাধ্যমে উল্লিখিত হয় তাহলে উপরের বাক্যটি কেমন হতে পারে তা লক্ষ্য করি-

 

আল্লাহ বলেন যে তিনি সমগ্র বিশ্ব মন্ডল সৃষ্টি করেছেন।

Allah says that he has created the whole world.

[ এখানে আল্লাহর কথাগুলো আমরা উল্লেখ করেছি। তাই আমাদের ভাষায়  আমি (I)  তিনি (he)-তে রূপামত্মরিত হয়েছে।

 

Indirect Speech : কোন বক্তার কথা অন্য কোন ব্যক্তি কর্তৃক উল্লিখিত/বর্ণিত হওয়াকে  Indirect Speech বলে। যেমন:

আল্লাহ বলেন যে তিনি সমগ্র বিশ্ব মন্ডল সৃষ্টি করেছেন।   Allah says that he has created the whole world.

 

Reporting Verb: যে Verb-এর সাহায্যে বক্তা শ্রোতাকে আকৃষ্ট করে তাকে Reporting Verb বলে। সংক্ষেপে বলতে গেলে, say/said/tell/told/ask/asked যুক্ত অংশই হলো Reporting Verb 

 

Reported Speech: যে অংশের মাধ্যমে বক্তা তার বক্তৃতা উপস্থাপন করে তাকে Reported Speech বলে। সংক্ষেপে বলতে গেলে, Inverted Comma যুক্ত অংশই হলো Reported Speech

যেমন:

Shoheb said to meI have done my home work.”

Direct Speech-এর কিছু শব্দ Indirect Speech-এ নিম্নরূপে পরিবর্তিত হয়:

বি: দ্র: Reported Verb  Present/Future Tenseএ হলে Indirect Speech-এ উপরিউক্ত নিয়ম প্রযোজ্য নয়।

 

Rules for changing persons
(Person পরিবর্তনের নিয়ম)

Reporting Verbএর Subject এবং Reported Speechএর ‘I/we/my/me/us’ একই ব্যক্তি বা পক্ষকে নির্দেশ করে।

Reporting Verbএর Object এবং Reported Speechএর ‘you/your’ একই ব্যক্তি বা পক্ষকে নির্দেশ করে।

 

বিশেস্নষণ:

Direct Speech-এর ক্ষেত্রে-

Subject……….. এবং ………… I/we একই ব্যক্তি বা পক্ষকে।
The man said to   me,       “I/We    can help       you.”
                          Object……………এবং …………… you/your একই ব্যক্তি বা পক্ষ।

 

  • এখানে, The man এবং I/we একই ব্যক্তি বা পক্ষ  এবং

  • me এবং you একই ব্যক্তি বা পক্ষ

 

Direct Speech

The man said to   me,          “I          can help         you.”
লোকটি      বলল    আমাকে,      “আমি   সাহায্য করতে পারি তোমাকে।

এখানে,

[The man এবং I একই ব্যক্তি]
[ me এবং you একই ব্যক্তি]

 

সুতরাং, Indirect Speech-এ

The man অনুযায়ী I পরিবর্তিত হবে he তে এবং me  অনুযায়ী you পরিবর্তিত হবে me তে। যেমন-

The man  told      me    that  he    could  help        me.
লোকটি      বলল    আমাকে   যে    সে   সাহায্য করতে পারত আমাকে।

 

Direct Speech

The man said to   me,        “We        can help           you.”
লোকটি      বলল     আমাকে,     “আমি   সাহায্য করতে পারি    তোমাকে।

 

এখানে,

[The man এবং We একই পক্ষ]
[ me এবং you একই ব্যক্তি]

 

সুতরাং, Indirect Speech-এ

The man অনুযায়ী we পরিবর্তিত হবে they তে এবং me  অনুযায়ী you পরিবর্তিত হবে me তে। যেমন-

The man  told    me   that  they     could  help        me.
লোকটি      বলল  আমাকে  যে    তারা  সাহায্য করতে পারত   আমাকে‘।

 

বাংলা বাক্যের গঠন অনুযায়ী-

প্রত্যক্ষ উক্তি

লোকটি  আমাকে বলল, “আমি/আমরা তোমাকে  সাহায্য করতে পারি।”

পরোক্ষ উক্তি

লোকটি আমাকে বলল যে সে/তারা আমাকে সাহায্য করতে পারত।

The man said to   me,          “I     am   your    well-wisher.”
লোকটি      বলল    আমাকে,       “আমি (হই)  তোমার   শুভাকাঙ্ক্ষী।”

[The man এবং I একই ব্যক্তি]
[ me এবং your একই ব্যক্তি]

 

সুতরাং, Indirect Speech-এ

The man অনুযায়ী I পরিবর্তিত হবে he তে এবং me  অনুযায়ী your পরিবর্তিত হবে my তে। যেমন-

সুতরাং, Indirect Speech-এ

The man অনুযায়ী My পরিবর্তিত হবে his-এ। যেমন-

লোকটি      বলল    আমাকে   যে    তার বাবা ছিলেন একজন ডাক্তার।

The man said to  me,   “Give  me  a glass of water.”
লোকটি     বলল    আমাকে, “দাও আমাকে এক গ্লাস পানি।”

সুতরাং, Indirect Speech-এ

The man অনুযায়ী me পরিবর্তিত হবে him-এ। যেমন-

The man requested me to give him a glass of water.
লোকটি  অনুরোধ করলো আমাকে      তাকে এক গ্লাস পানি দেওয়ার জন্য।

 

বাংলা বাক্যের গঠন অনুযায়ী-

প্রত্যক্ষ উক্তি

লোকটি আমাকে বলল, “আমাকে এক গ্লাস পানি দাও।”

পরোক্ষ উক্তি

লোকটি আমাকে অনুরোধ করলো তাকে এক গ্লাস পানি দেওয়ার জন্য।

 

Direct Speech

He said to  me,       “You can help me*.”
সে   বলল   আমাকে,    ‘‘তুমি  সাহায্য করতে পার আমাকে।’’

এখানে,

[He এবং me একই ব্যক্তি]

[me এবং you একই ব্যক্তি]

 

সুতরাং, Indirect Speech-এ

He অনুযায়ী me পরিবর্তিত হবে him-এ এবং me  অনুযায়ী you পরিবর্তিত হবে I তে। যেমন-

Indirect Speech

He told     me,  that  I    could   help        him*.
সে   বলল  আমাকে যে  আমি সাহায্য করতে পারতাম তাকে।

 

বাংলা বাক্যের গঠন অনুযায়ী-

প্রত্যক্ষ উক্তি

সে আমাকে বলল, ‘‘তুমি আমাকে  সাহায্য করতে পার ।’’

পরোক্ষ উক্তি

সে আমাকে বলল যে আমি তাকে সাহায্য করতে পারতাম।

 

সংক্ষেপ-

Subject   = I, We, my me*/us* [ Reported Speech-এর me*/us* ]এবং

Object    = you, your

 

 

■ Direct Speechএ Reporting Verb যদি Present বা Future Tense হয়, তাহলে Indirect Speech-এ Tense-এর কোন পরিবর্তন হয় না। যেমন:

Direct              

Shovon says,  I will do the work.”
Present Tense  Future Indefinite

 

Indirect           

Shovon says    that  he will do the work.
Present Tense          Future Indefinite

■ Reported Speech-টি Universal truth কিংবা Habitual fact হলে Indirect Speech-এ Tense-এর কোন পরিবর্তন হয় না। যেমন:

Direct              : The teacher said, “Allah is one.”

Indirect           : The teacher said that Allah is one.

■ Direct Speech-এ Reporting Verb (say/tell/ask) যদি Past Tense-এ হয়, অর্থাৎ (said/told/asked)-এ হয় তাহলে Indirect Speech-এ  Present/Future-গুলো Past হয়। যেমন:

Present / Future   শব্দটির   জায়গায়…………………………………Past শব্দটি লিখলেই আমরা Indirect Speech-এর প্রত্যাশিত Tense পাব। অর্থাৎ

WH word যুক্ত প্রশ্নে if বা whether-এর প্রয়োজন হয় না। নিমেণর বাক্যটি লক্ষ্য করি।

Passage Narration

1. প্রথমেই সমসত্মPassage-টি পড়ে Speaker (বক্তা), Person spoken to (শ্রোতা) এবং Sentence-গুলোর mood (ক্রিয়ার ধরণ) সনাক্ত করতে হবে। অর্থাৎ সমসত্ম Passage-টি পড়ে বক্তা, শ্রোতা এবং Sentence-গুলো কোন কোন Tense-এ আছে তা সঠিকভাবে সনাক্ত করতে হবে।

2. Reporting Verb-টি মাঝে বা শেষে থাকলেও Indirect করার সময় Reporting Verb-টিকে Sentence-এর শুরম্নতে আনতে হবে। যেমন:

Direct              :           “You look little bit like my mother.” The boy said to the woman.

Indirect           :           The boy told the woman that she looked little bit like his mother.

3. কোন বক্তার পর পর একাধিক উক্তি (Speech) থাকলে উক্ত উক্তিগুলোর ক্ষেত্রে added, also added,   again said, further added ইত্যাদি ব্যবহার করতে হয় এবং  দুটি প্রশ্নবোধক Sentence পর পর থাকলে দ্বিতীয়টির ক্ষেত্রে  also asked, again askedহয়। যেমন:

Direct              :           I said to my friend, “I don’t believe you. You have cheated with me.”

Indirect           :           I told my friend that I didn’t believe him and added that he had cheated with me.

 

Direct              :           The officer said to the worker, “Why don’t you come in time? Have

you forgotten the rules?”

Indirect           :           The office asked the worker why he didn’t come in time. He (The

officer) also asked if he had forgotten the rules.

4. Reported Speech-এ ‘Yes’ or ‘No’থাকলে Indirect করার সময় ‘Yes’ এর পরিবর্তে replied in the affirmative that এবং ‘No’ এর পরিবর্তে replied in the negative that ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Direct              :           My friend said to me, “Are you going to Khulna tomorrow?” “No. I

have changed my decision.” said I.

Indirect           :           My friend asked me if I was going to Khulna the next day. I replied in

the negative that I had changed my decision.

অথবা

Subject + পূর্বের প্রশ্ন বাক্যের সাথে সঙ্গতি রেখে Appropriate Auxiliary Verbবসাতে হয়। যেমন:

Indirect           :     My friend asked me if I was going to Khulna the next day. I replied

that I was not. I added that I had changed my decision.

A. The man empathically refused to confer guilt.

6. Direct Speech-এ যদি কাউকে Address (সম্বোধন) করা হয়, তবে Indirect Speech-এ Addressing as + Sub. +Reporting verb +বাকী অংশ বসবে। যেমন:

Direct              :           Are you tired, friends?” said the leader.

Indirect           :           Addressing them as friends, the leader asked if they were tired.

 

1. “Come in, my friend,” said I.  বাক্যটির Indirect speech হচ্ছে-

A. Addressing his as my friend, I told him to go in.

Direct  : “Are you brothers” asked the mistress of the house, turning to the dervishes.

Indirect: Turning to the dervishes, the mistress of the house asked if they were brothers.

9. Direct Speech-এ Assertive Sentence-এর শেষে প্রশ্নবোধক চিহ্ন (?) থাকলে Indirectকরার সময়Reporting verb-এর পূর্বে Being surprisedলিখতে হয় এবংReporting verb-টিকেask/askedএ পরিবর্তন করতে হয়। যেমন:

 

Direct  : She said to me, “You have remembered how she looked all these years?

Indirect: Being surprised, she asked me if I had remembered how she had looked all those years.

  1. Direct Speech-এ “Thank you”, “Congratulate you”, “Welcome you”ইত্যাদি থাকলেIndirectকরার সময়Reporting verb-এরSubject + verb-এরPast form + Reporting verb-এরobject বসে। যেমন:

Direct              :           My friend said to me, “Congratulate you”

Indirect           :           My friend congratulated me.

11. Would/Couldযুক্ত Interrogative Sentence-কে Imperative Sentenceহিসাবে গণ্য করা হয়। কারণ, Would/Could যুক্ত Interrogative Sentence-এ বক্তার অনুরোধের বহি:প্রকাশ ঘটে। তাই Imperative Sentence-এর নিয়মানুসারে Would/Could-এর পরিবর্তে requested toহয়। যেমন:

Answer: Salam asked kamal what his (K) programme was after the examination. Kamal replied that he had not yet decided. He (K) asked if he (S) could suggest any. Then Salam proposed that they should go on a picnic. Kamal exclaimed with joy that it was a very excellent idea. He added that he (K) he would certainly join him (S).

 

  1. A fruit seller said, “Which fruits do you want to buy? I have apples from Australia, oranges from Darjeeling, grapes from Kashmir.” The customer said, “What fruits of our country do you have?” The seller said, “I have coconut, guava and jackfruit.” The customer said, “Give one kg of guava as it will be the substitute of Australian apples.”

Answer: A fruit seller asked the customer which fruits he (c) wanted to buy. He told that he (s) had apples from Australia, oranges from Darjeeling, grapes from Kashmir. The customer asked him (s) what fruits of our country he had. The seller replied that he had coconut, guava and jackfruit. Then the customer told him to give one kg of guava as it would be the substitute of Australian apples.

  1. The man said to the manager, “May I come in sir?” “Yes, come in. What do you want?” said the manager. “I want to open a bank account in your bank.” said the man. “Can you tell me how I can open a saving account?”

Answer: The man politely asked the manager if he (man) might go in. The manager replied that he might and told him to go in. He (manager) asked him what he wanted. The man replied that he wanted to open a bank account in their bank. He again asked him (manager) if he could tell him (manager) how he could open a saving account.

 

  1. The passer-by stopped me and said, “Sir, can you tell me the way to the nearest inn?” “Yes, I can.” I said. “Go straight about 100 yards and turn left. You will find it.” “Thank you sir,” he said.

Answer: Addressing me as sir the passer-by stopped me and asked me if I could tell him the way to the nearest inn. I replied that I could. I told him to go straight about 100 yards and turn left and also told that he would find it. He politely thanked me.

 

  1. The old man said, “Can you give me some food? I’ve been starving for three days.” The maid said, “Why do you beg? Can’t you work?” “No, I am unable to work,” the old man replied.

Answer: The old man asked the maid if she could give him some food. He told that he had been starving for three days. The maid asked him why he begged. She also asked if he couldn’t work. The old man replied that he couldn’t because he was unable to work.

 

  1. “We would like to go on an excursion. Can we have your permission, sir?” said the students. “Yes, you can arrange it after the examination is over. And you should choose a historical place for that,” replied the Headmaster. “Thank you, sir.”

Answer: The students told the Headmaster that they would like to go on an excursion and respectfully asked him if they could have his permission. Answering in the affirmative the Headmaster added that they could arrange it after the examination was over. He also added that they should choose a historical place for that. Then the students respectfully thanked him.

 

  1. “Great king of the genies,” called the monster, “I will never again disobey you.” Hearing those words, the fisherman became brave and said, “Tell me why you were locked up in the vase.” The giant angrily looked at him and said, “Speak to me more politely or I will kill you.”

Hearing those words, the fisherman became brave and ordered the monster to tell him why he (monster) had been locked up in the vase. The giant angrily looked at him and threatened him to speak to him (monster) more politely or he (monster) would kill him.

 

  1. Once I asked a sweet little girl, “What is your mother’s name?” She replied cleverly, “I know my mother’s name but I won’t tell you that.” I said, “What a clever girl you are! “I don’t tell my mother’s name to anybody whom I don’t know,” she spoke with an air of confidence.

Answer: Once I askd a sweet little girl what her mother’s name was. She replied cleverly that she knew her mother’s name but she would not tell me that. I exclaimed with wonder that she was a very clever girl. She spoke with an air of confidence that she did not tell her mother’s name to anybody whom she did not know.

 

  1. Rashed said to Karim, “How are you? I went to your hostel yesterday, but did not find you. Where did you go?” “I went to the station.” said Karim, “I had to receive my maternal uncle there.”

Answer: Rashed asked Karim how he was and added that he (R) had gone to his (K) hostel the previous day but had not found him (K). Rashed also asked where he (k) had gone. Karim replied that he had gone to the station. Because he had to receive his maternal uncle there.

 

  1. “Have you killed the rats?” said the Mayor. “Yes, I have,” said the Piper. “Give me the promised money.” “How funny!” said the Mayor. “We cannot give you so much money. Take only fifty.”

Answer: The Mayor asked the Piper if he (P) had killed the rats. He replied in the affirmative and said that he had and demanded to give him (p) the promised money. The Mayor exclaimed with surprise that he was very funny. He (M) also said that they could not give him (P) so much money. He further said him to take only fifty.

 

  1. “Did people use stamps in those days?” asked Rafiq. “Yes! Answered Mr. Jamal, “The first stamps were used in 1840.” “Are they easy to get now?” asked Shafiq. “They are very difficult to get,” his uncle replied.

Answer: Rafiq asked Mr. Jamil if people had used stamps in those days. Mr. Jamil answered in the affirmative and said that the first stamps had been used in 1840. Shafiq asked his uncle if there were easy to get then (at present). His uncle replied that they were very difficult to get.

 

  1. Zaman said to me, “Have you finished reading the book I gave you yesterday?” “Yes, I have finished reading the book,” I replied. “What an interesting book it is! I wish I would borrow the book earlier!” I said. “Will you return the book to me today?” he asked.

Answer: Zaman asked me if I had finished reading the book he had given me the previous day. I replied in the affirmative and said that I had finished reading the book. I exclaimed with joy that it was a very interesting book and also wished that I would borrow the book earlier. Then he also asked if I would return the book to him that day.

 

  1. My sons, listen to me. A great treasure lies hidden in the land. I am going to leave it to you.” “How’ll we find it?” said the sons. “You must dig the land for it,” said the old man.

Answer: The old man told his sons to listen to him and added that a great treasure lay hidden in the land. He also added that he was going to leave that to them. The sons asked how they would find that. Then the old man replied that they had to dig the land for that.

 

  1. “Ratan, have you done your English today?” asked the teacher. “Yes, sir, I did it. But I haven’t understood some grammatical points,” replied Ratan.“Where is the problem?” said the teacher. “Let us try again.”

Answer: The teacher asked Ratan if/whether he had done his English that day. Ratan respectfully replied in the affirmative and said that he had done it but he hadn’t understood some grammatical points. Then the teacher asked him where the problem was and he (T) proposed that they should try again.

 

  1. Father said to his son, “Why are you making late” Go to school now.” “No, I am not going to school today. I feel dizzy,” said his son.

Answer: Father asked his son why he was making late and ordered him (s) to go to school then. The boy replied in the negative and said that he was not going to school that day as he felt dizzy.

 

  1. “Why did you not go to school yesterday?” said the mother to the girl. “I was ill, mum.” the girl replied. “How are you today? The mother asked again. “Well,” said the girl. “Don’t worry for me.”

Answer: The mother asked the girl why she (g) had not gone to school the previous day. Addressing her mother as mum the girl replied that she had been ill. The mother again asked her how she (g) was that day. Then the girl replied that she was well and requested her (m) not to worry for her (g).

 

  1. “I have got GPA-5 in the SSC examination, said Rafiq. “Congratulations!” I said. “What do you intend to do now?” “I want to study in a reputed college. I’ll try to get admission in Notre Dame College,” Rafiq replied.

Answer: Rafiq told me that he had got GPA-5 in the SSC examination. I congratulated him and asked him what he intended to do then. Rafiq replied that he wanted to study in a reputed college and would try to get admission in Notre Dame College.

 

  1. “Why are you putting up the food in your pocket, sir? Why don’t you eat” said the nobleman. “I am doing the right thing. My dress deserves these rich dishes.” replied Sheikh Saadi. “I don’t understand what you mean to say,” said the nobleman, “And I am sorry?

Answer: The nobleman respectfully asked Sheikh Saadi why he was putting up the food in his pocket and why he did not eat. Sheikh Saadi replied that he was doing the right thing and added that his dress deserved those rich dishes. The nobleman said that he did not understand what he meant to say and said that he was sorry.

 

  1. My friend said to me, “Why are you sitting alone here? I have been looking for you. Let us go for a walk in the open field.” “Leave me alone,” said I.

Answer: My friend asked me why I was sitting alone there. He added that he had been looking for me and proposed me that we should go for a walk in the open field. Then I requested him to leave me alone.

 

  1. A hawker said to me, “Do you want any newspaper? I have all types of newspapers. Please take one.” I said, “I want a weekly. Do you have any magazine?” He said, “Yes, I have the latest copy of Jai Jai Din.”

Answer. A hawker asked me if I wanted any newspaper and added that he had all types of newspaper. He politely requested me to take one. I told him that I wanted a weekly and then asked him if he had any magazine. He replied in the affirmative and said that he had the latest copy of Jai Jai Din.

The boy said to the teacher, “Sir, I will be much obliged if you kindly lend me the book you praised highly in the classroom yesterday.” The teacher said, “I am very glad to know that you are eager to read this book. You are welcome to any of my books that you like.” “Thank you, sir, said the boy.

Answer: The boy respectfully told his teacher that he (b) would be much obliged if he (t) kindly lent him (b) the book he (t) had praised highly in the classroom the previous day. The teacher told him that he (t) was very glad to know that he (b) was eager to read that book. He (t) also added that he (b) was welcome to any of his (t) books that he (b) liked. The boy respectfully thanked his teacher.

Answer: Sohel wished Lamia good morning and asked how much preparation she had taken for the test examination. Lamia replied that she had a great preparation and added that she had to get GPA-5. Sohel then exclaimed with joy that she was a very lucky girl. With a sad face (wegl©gy‡L) he said that his preparation was not good.

 

  1. “Have you seen your mother, Jerry?” “I see her every summer. She sends for me.” I wanted to cry out. “Why are you not with her? How can she let you go away again?” He said, “She comes up here from Mannville whenever she can. She does not have a job now.”

Answer: The authoress asked Jerry if he had seen her mother. Jerry replied that he saw her every summer and she sent for him. The authoress wanted to cry out and also asked why he was not with her. She further asked how she (Jerry’s mother) could let him (J) go away again. Then Jerry replied that she (Jerry’s mother) came up there from Mannvile whenever she could. He continued that she did not have a job then (at present).

 

  1. “I came here yesterday from my village,” he said. “Why did you come?” I asked. “My mother sent me to you with this letter.” “How is your mother? I have not seen her for a long time. I hope she is quite well.”

Answer: He told me that he had come there the previous day from his village. I asked him why he had come. He replied that his mother had sent him to me with the letter. I again asked him how his mother was. I added that I had not seen her for a long time and hoped that she was quite well.

 

  1. “Where are you from?” said the teacher. “I am from Nepal,” said the student. “How did you find Dhaka when you first arrived? said the teacher. “Well, I like it, I think the city is very beautiful,” said the student.

Answer: The teacher asked the student where he was from. The student replied that he was from Nepal. The teacher again asked him how he had found Dhaka when he had first arrived. The student replied that it was well and he liked Dhaka. He added that he thought the city was very beautiful.

 

  1. “Where is my son?” said the Grocer. “A crow carried your son away” said the fruit seller. “You are lair. How can a crow carry away such a big boy?” “Just the same way as mice can eat away the balance and weights.”

Answer: The Grocer asked the fruit seller where his (G) son was. The fruit seller replied that a crow had carried his son away. The Grocer called the fruit seller a liar and also asked him how a crow could carry away such a big boy. The fruit seller (promptly) replied that the crow could carry his son away just the same way as mice could eat away the balance and weights.

 

  1. “Where did you go yesterday?” said Rima. “I went to Chittagong to see my mother.” said Sonali. “She has been suffering from high blood pressure.” “Is she sound now?” said Rimi. “No.” said Sonali.

Answer: Rima asked Sonali where she had gone the previous day. Sonali replied that she had gone to Chittagong to see her mother. She (S) added that she (m) had been suffering from high blood pressure. Rima again asked if she (m) was sound then. Sonali replied that she (m) was not.
